My Pencil Journey

You know, ever since I was a kid, I’ve been obsessed with pencils. Like, give me a pencil and a blank sheet of paper, and I’d forget the world. Umm… it wasn’t even about drawing perfectly back then. It was just this crazy joy of watching lines turn into shapes and shapes into something meaningful. Over time, sketching went from “just for fun” to my favourite hobby .

And honestly, there’s something different about using just black and white to create art. No colors, just light, shadows, and lots of patience. It’s like giving life to a blank page with nothing but a pencil.

You know, I’ve tried adding colors too like blues, reds, all that. But honestly, No matter how much I tried, it just didn’t feel the same. The sketch would lose that raw vibe. So, I decided to stick with what I love keeping it simple with black and white.

My Simple Little tools
so here’s the things: I don’t use fancy stuff. My go-to tools are just Apsara sketching pencils. Yes, that’s it. I mean, they’re simple, but they get the job done perfectly. Each pencil has its own vibe:

2B & 4B are perfect for starting with light strokes and soft outlines.

6B comes in handy for shading and mid-tones, bridging the light and dark areas seamlessly.

8B & 10B are my go-to pencils for adding depth and contrast, especially when I want to highlight bold details and shadows.

A Funny Little Story Talking about how much I love sketching, let me share this funny incident from when I was around 9-10 years old. We were living in our old house (now we won't live there ), and the walls in our hall were this dull, cream color. And like I said, when I see a pencil, I just can’t resist. So, one day, I decided the walls needed some "decoration."

No one was around, except my mom, who was sleeping. So I grabbed my pencil and eraser and started sketching on the wall! And not just small doodles either. I went all in and drew something almost as tall as me a full size sketch of a girl. Actually, now that I think about it, I was probably trying to sketch myself.

When I finished, I was SO proud. I just stood there looking at it like, “Wow, I really did that!” But then my mom woke up, and let’s just say she wasn’t as impressed. She started scolding me, and I was just standing there trying to defend my “masterpiece.”

Then my dad came home, and at first, he laughed. But yeah, after that, he joined in on the scolding too. What came next was the real struggle—erasing the whole thing. My dad and I spent what felt like forever rubbing the wall with an eraser. It was funny but exhausting. Even now, when I think about it, I laugh.

So, here’s a bird sketch I did recently. The main focus was its eyes they’re so sharp and intense, right? I also had a lot of fun adding texture to the feathers. For this one, I used my trusty 4B, 8B, and 10B pencils. The 10B was perfect for those deep shadows, while a white pencil gave the feathers that extra good.

To be honest, this sketch took me like 2 hours! Yeah, it was a long process, but I loved every second of it. I tried a bunch of shading techniques, and seeing it all come together was sooo satisfying.

Another sketch that’s close to my heart is this one of a puppy. I loved working on its expressive eyes they’re full of curiosity and innocence. That’s what I wanted to capture.

For this sketch, I used 2B, 4B, and 8B pencils to create soft textures and subtle shadows. It took me about an hour, but I was completely focused the entire time. Drawing fur can be tricky, but short, gentle strokes made the puppy’s coat look soft and natural.

What I love most about this sketch is how it feels alive. The puppy’s warmth and charm seem to jump off the page, and that’s exactly what I aim for in my work.

But these days, with my busy schedule, I don’t get much time to sketch like before. I’m usually caught up with so many other things, but whenever I see a pencil lying around, it’s like I can’t resist. Whatever I’m doing at that moment whether it’s studying or something else it all just slips my mind, and I start sketching. I’ll doodle on anything I find in front of me. It’s like I can’t help it. Sketching gives me this peace and happiness that nothing else does. It’s my way of taking a break and feeling truly relaxed.
